Initial Evaluation in Tennessee
Your first visit. A full block of time spent finding out what is actually wrong and why, before anyone hands you a single exercise.

What is the initial evaluation?
Somebody has probably already told you it is just age, or just arthritis, or just what happens now. That answer explains nothing and fixes nothing, and it is usually wrong about the part that matters. The initial evaluation is where that gets taken seriously. It is your first visit in Tennessee with a licensed physical therapist, it runs 30 to 60 minutes, and it is one on one from the moment you sit down. The point of it is not to start exercising you. The point is to find out which structure is actually causing the trouble, what has been compensating for it, and what a realistic recovery looks like from where you are today.
This visit is the front door to our physical therapy service, and everything after it is built on what we find here. You do not need a referral to book one. Tennessee has direct access, so a licensed physical therapist can evaluate and treat you for up to 90 days without a prescription. Some plans still want a referral on file for coverage, so give us your insurance information when you call and we will verify your benefits before you ever walk in.
What you leave with.
Most first appointments end with a printout and a follow-up. Yours ends with three things you can repeat to your daughter in the car.
An explanation you understand
Your therapist tells you what they found, in plain words, and shows you on your own body why it hurts where it hurts. If something looks like it belongs with your physician instead, you hear that too, on the first day rather than the sixth week.
A plan with a timeline
You get a plan of care with a number of visits attached to it. Two to three visits a week for four to six weeks is typical, and your therapist will tell you what is realistic for your situation instead of leaving it open ended.
Something to do tonight
You go home with a short home program, usually two or three things, chosen because they move the needle rather than to fill a page. Starting the same day is what makes the second visit worth having.
What happens at the first visit.
Three parts, in this order, with the same therapist for all of it. Nobody hands you off to an aide halfway through.
The conversation
Your therapist asks what happened, when it started, what makes it worse, and what you have stopped doing because of it. That last answer is the important one. Getting back to a specific thing, the church steps or the garden, is what the plan gets built around.
The testing
Strength, range of motion, balance and how you walk, plus a hands-on assessment of the joints and tissue involved. You will be asked to stand up out of a chair and to move in ways that reproduce the problem, because a symptom you can trigger is a symptom we can track.
The findings and the first treatment
Your therapist explains what they found, agrees the plan with you, and there is usually time to begin treating the same day. You leave having started, not having scheduled.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, bring any imaging and notes from your doctor, and arrive about ten minutes early so the paperwork is done before your time starts.
I had a great experience with Gerihab Physical Therapy. The team is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely cares about helping each person improve their quality of life.
What comes after the first visit.

Physical Therapy
The service this evaluation belongs to, and what the weeks after your first visit look like.

Balance & Gait Disorders
When walking has changed and nobody can say why, the evaluation is where that gets answered.

Back Pain & Sciatica
Leg pain that starts in the back rarely settles alone. We treat the segment causing it.
