01What It Is

What is the dementia care seminar?

This is a training day, not a clinic appointment. If you are looking for treatment for yourself or a parent, our neurological rehab and geriatric physical therapy pages are the ones you want. This page is for people who care for someone with dementia, whether that is your job or your household. Both of you tend to arrive the same way, having been told the behavior is just the disease and there is nothing to be done about it. That answer is wrong often enough to be worth a day of your time.

The seminar runs one day, live and online, for seven CEU hours. It is the course required to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner, and it is presented by Dr. Michael Chua, PT, DPT, alongside Lizette Cloete, OTR. Dr. Chua is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a Certified Dementia Care Trainer, and the author of four books on dementia care: MisUnderstanding Dementia, Time to Fly, 365 Daily Tips for Dementia Caregivers, and Caregivers Freedom Journal. The day is built the way those books are, around what actually changes at the bedside.

02Who It's For

Who sits in this seminar.

The CEU hours matter to clinicians and the certification matters to employers, but the material is written to be used by anyone who spends their days with a person living with dementia.

01

Therapists and nurses

You already treat people with dementia, you just were not trained specifically for it. The seminar carries seven CEU hours and leads to Certified Dementia Practitioner status, which is a plain signal to families and facilities that you know what you are doing in that room.

02

Facility and agency staff

Aides, activity directors and administrators sit in this course too. Certification travels back into the building with you, because a team that shares one approach to a resident who is frightened at four in the afternoon produces a very different afternoon.

03

Family caregivers

You are doing full time work nobody trained you for, and the advice you get is mostly patience. A day of real instruction on why the behavior happens, and what to change in the room before you change anything else, is worth more than another list of tips.

03Why Certify

Why become a Certified Dementia Practitioner?

A credential is only worth what it changes. Here is what the CDP designation actually moves once the seminar is behind you.

01

It raises your competence

The certification advances your skill and knowledge in Alzheimer's and dementia care, and it holds you to education and training above what regulation asks for. That shows up in the ordinary moments, when you can read what a person is telling you without words and respond to it correctly the first time.

02

It signals commitment

CDP status is a visible commitment to competency when working with a person living with dementia, and to the best practices of the field. Families notice it, referral sources notice it, and it earns a quiet pride in your own work that is worth naming out loud.

03

It travels back to your team

The knowledge does not stay with you. It reaches agencies, co-workers, patients and families, gives the health care field more leaders and a model others follow, and lifts the ongoing dementia care that everyone around you provides.
